Aimed at everybody that easily wants to create compound documents on the NEXTSTEP platform that contain different types of objects, OOE allows objects to be created, edited by a suitable application, and stored within the working document. OOE allows objects created in a 'server' application (drawing program, spreadsheet etc.) to be stored, or embedded, in the document of a 'client' application (word processor, presentation program etc.). Double-clicking on the embedded object will open it with the correct 'server' application for immediate editing. President and co-founder of Xanthus, Jesper Lundh said "OOE allows you to be very productive, for example, create a Questor spreadsheet from within your OpenWrite document in a matter of seconds. You no longer need to create a dummy spreadsheet document to 'paste and link' from." OOE is an open standard, and Xanthus will support other third-party developers to make their products OOE compliant. "We want as many third-party developers as possible to support OOE", says Jesper Lundh. OOE designer and co-founder of Xanthus, Bjorn Backlund said "OOE is based on standard NEXTSTEP tools, like the pasteboard and distributed objects, and is very easy to implement. We made the NEXTSTEP demo application Draw OOE compliant in just two hours." The following products from Xanthus supports OOE: OpenWrite, Questor and Graphity. OOE will be shown in the Alembic booth at NEXTSTEP Expo and in the Xanthus Suite at the San Francisco Marriott near Moscone Center. Xanthus International, headquartered in Stockholm, Sweden, is a privately owned software development company that specializes in the NEXTSTEP platform. Xanthus was founded in 1990, and shipped its first product, CraftMan, an award-winning multimedia programming tool for NEXTSTEP in 1992. The product line now includes Questor, a spreadsheet; Graphity, a 3D charting program that supports RenderMan; the new OpenWrite word processor, and OpenBase, a flat-file database.
